What makes us like or enjoy a character above others?
The obvious reason is that they're just extremely well written, occasionally they can be funny and maybe add personality to the game or film, or maybe we are roleplaying and we can relate easier. Other times, they're simply what we call "cool"
We as the players or viewers can even establish a connection or relationship with a character because of the most minimal or mundane things, therefore enhancing our experience with a game or a film.
Whether it is hair, and appearance in general, an ideology or point of view, Relatability is important because audiences can feel empathy, sympathy, and can understand a character better.
In instances players can imprint themselves into a character, because they, like the character, are unprepared for the journey that lies ahead.
Something like the ability to customize a character and pick their perks, skills, and gear makes the experience more personal, we essentially make them, we dictate their actions.
Most of us can’t relate to someone like Joel or Don Draper, but we understand their story, where they come from, their pain, their flaws, and show empathy for them.
When a character behaves in a way that is so entertaining to watch, we enjoy them simply because of their personality and demeanor. Sometimes, they are simply SO COOL that it is impossible not to like them.
